GIBSON RECORDS FIRST HKPGA SUCCESS OF THE SEASON

While amateurs shine in the Ladies' Division

Grant Gibson clinched his first Hong Kong Professional Golf Association event of the season in style on Sept 9, recording a one-stroke victory over Chris Tang at Discovery Bay Golf Club. Asian Tour regular David Freeman finished in third, three shots further back.

Gibson, who has challenged for a number of HKPGA tournaments in recent times, showed no sign of nerves as he recorded a second consecutive round of 67, which gave him a two-day total of 134 (8-under-par). The victory earned the big-hitting Australian $20,000 and a leap up the HKPGA Order of Merit Standings.

“The weather has been great throughout & the course was in top shape, a perfect day for scoring,” said Gibson, who works at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club. “It’s a great feeling to have finally won, as I’ve been so close many times before.”

Gibson’s win now makes him one of the favourites for next month’s Yinli-HKPGA Classic. The event, the most prestigious on the HKPGA calendar, will feature some of the region’s best professionals, including players from mainland China and Taiwan.

In the Ladies’ Division, amateurs Rani Pomareda and 14-year-old Tiffany Chan stole the show with exceptional performances. Bali-born Pomareda carded rounds of 78 and 70 to outlast talented Tiffany by five strokes. Tiffany’s play will surprise no-one. The Diocesan Girls’ School student has enjoyed a stellar season. After victory at the MacGregor Hong Kong Junior Close Championship earlier on in the year, she finished in fourth place in the 13-14 age division at the Callaway Junior World Championships in San Diego. Melody Chan was the best-placed professional, finishing in third on a two-day total of 160.

In the Seniors’ Division, Alex Tang enjoyed a slender one-stroke victory over Michael Kan. Tang shot rounds of 71 and 70 for a one-under-par total of 141. Tang Shu Wing and Stanley Leung tied for third place on a score of 150.
