UBS Hong Kong Open 2008 – Hong Kong Qualifying Round
November 11th, 2008

Taking place from 10-11 November over the difficult North Course at Kau Sai Chau, 54 elite players from Hong Kong—comprising pros from the HKPGA and amateurs from the HKGA—battled it out over 36 holes at the UBS Hong Kong Open Qualifying tournament to earn one of four coveted spots at the co-sanctioned European and Asian Tour event.
The first day provided cool and windy conditions, which was reflected in the relatively high scoring. Indeed, 76 proved to be the lowest score of the day, which was achieved by four players: professionals James Stewart, MK Tang and Lokky Lee, and Florida-based amateur Jason Hak. Only one shot behind them was Head Professional at Kau Sai Chau Paul Riley and Alexander Cheng. HKPGA Order of Merit winner Wong Woon-man was a further shot adrift after a 78.
Scoring was a little better on the second day, which was highlighted by Eric Ma’s 74, the lowest round of the tournament. Unfortunately for Ma, his disastrous 86 on the first day meant he finished in a tie for tenth, which was outside the qualifying mark.
Instead, it was James Stewart who finished at the top of the leaderboard. Stewart’s two-day total of 153 giving him a slender one shot cushion over two young amateurs Steven Lam and Jason Hak, who tied for second on 154. With the final spot in the prestigious Hong Kong Open field still at stake, Riley overcame Wong on the second extra hole of a sudden death playoff after the pair finished on matching 156 totals.
