REJUVENATED PARK READY FOR TITLE DEFENCE AT 30TH  AGEAS HONG KONG PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

13 Jan 2013

Defending Champion UNHO PARK

Australian Unho Park is keen to become the first player since 1994 to successfully defend his HKPGA Championship title. Park who lost his Asian Tour card at the end of 2011 credits his win in the Ageas HKPGA Championship in May 2012 to rejuvenating his career and winning back his Asian Tour card last month.
After enduring a miserable 2011 season Park had little confidence in his game but for 3 days in May last year, he found the old spark and rode a hot putter to the HKPGA title.
2011 was a real low point in my golf career. I played badly all year and lost so much confidence in my game. When I received an invite to play in the Ageas HKPGA Championship, I arrived with very low expectations. For some reason, playing on three different courses somehow changed my focus a bit and then on the last day at Kau Sai Chau I putted beautifully and managed to hang on for the win.
Park rode the momentum from his win to record a strong second half showing on the Asian Tour and he finally finished in 59th position on the Asian Tour Order or Merit, securing his full playing rights for the 2013 season.
I must admit, winning in Hong Kong gave me a lot of confidence and I managed to take that confidence onto the Asian Tour. I played much better towards the end of the season and managed to just keep my card and finish in the top 60. It is so important to finish in the top 60 as that is the only way you can get into the richest events on the Asian Tour. I feel good about my game and hopefully I will put in a good performance this week and maybe even defend.
Fellow Australian Scott Barr is full of confidence heading into his first Ageas HKPGA Championship after having one of his best years on the Asian Tour. Barr finished the 2012 season in 21st position on the Asian Tour Order of Merit with earning in excess of US$200,000. He also won an event in Hong Kong in June 2012 by 7 shots.
I have always enjoyed coming to Hong Kong. I love the town and I have many friends who work here so it is always great to catch up with them. I have heard many great things about the Ageas HKPGA Championship and looking at the list of previous winners I would love to add my name to that impressive list.

I understand it is the 30th playing of the HKPGA Championship so I really want to do well and as I have

Asian Tour player Australian Scott Barr

never played the Old course at Fanling I decided to come in a day early to play a practice round and I will also get another round of practice on one of the other courses too, said Barr, a regular visitor to the Hong Kong Open.
Barr leads a strong contingent of Australians which includes 1990 USPGA Champion Wayne Grady is coming to Hong Kong early to get familiar with the different courses that he will encounter in this unique event which sees the players compete over 3 different courses.
Asian Tour players Ross Bain of Scotland, Lam Chih Bing of Singapore will also headline the Ageas Hong Kong PGA Championship alongside the local professionals.
